The Security Council condemns the Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia

The UN Security Council condemned the Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia across the border, explaining that the increasing number of attacks on civilian and commercial ships poses a major threat to the maritime security of ships in the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea.

In a statement, the Security Council expressed its unwavering support for the UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, stressing its expectations that the two parties would meet under the auspices of the United Nations, in good faith and without preconditions.

The Council stressed the need to stop the escalation by all parties, including the Houthi escalation in Marib, calling on the Yemeni government to facilitate the regular and without delay entry of fuel and humanitarian ships to the port of Hodeidah.

Saudi Arabia had expressed its regret and anger that the Security Council had to date stood helpless, and was unable to issue a statement condemning the Houthi attacks on the Kingdom.

The Saudi ambassador, Abdullah Al-Mouallimi, condemned the attacks, urging the Security Council to take firm steps to deter the Houthis.

He also affirmed his country's right to take all necessary measures to protect the security and stability of its territories, in accordance with its obligations under international law

Al-Mouallimi added that the Kingdom supports the efforts of the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations to Yemen, to reach a comprehensive ceasefire and start a comprehensive political process.
