Jerusalem Israel closes Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood and expels the solidarity with its residents The Israeli police closed the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in the center of occupied East Jerusalem, and removed the solidarity activists from the solidarity tent, following calls to organize a demonstration for the Israeli extremist right in the neighborhood, according to the Wadi Hilweh Information Center. On Wednesday, the Israeli police closed the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in the center of occupied East Jerusalem, and removed the solidarity activists from the solidarity tent, leaving only the residents of the neighborhood threatened with displacement in favor of settlers, according to a human rights center. This comes in the wake of calls to organize a demonstration for the Israeli far-right in the neighborhood, according to the Wadi Hilweh Information Center (a non-governmental human rights organization). The center said, on its official Facebook page, that "the Israeli occupation police checked the identities of those inside the solidarity tent in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, and removed those who were not residents of the neighborhood." He added that "the occupation forces stationed at the entrances to the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, and set up barriers with iron mounds there." On a regular basis, the residents of Sheikh Jarrah are subjected to attacks by settlers who live in houses in the neighborhood that were confiscated from Palestinian families during the past years. On November 3, Palestinian families in the neighborhood announced their rejection of a "settlement" offer submitted by the Israeli Supreme Court regarding the evacuation of their homes in favor of settlers. The court said at the time that if the families and the settlement association did not agree to the settlement, it would take a decision on the families' petitions against eviction from their homes, without specifying a date. Since 1956, Palestinian families have resided in their homes in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, according to an agreement at the time with both the Jordanian government and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). Israeli violations against the residents of Jerusalem, especially the people of Sheikh Jarrah, caused a military confrontation between the Palestinian resistance factions in the Gaza Strip and the Israeli occupation army, which lasted 11 days last May.
