Dr. Olga Boyko, Head of the Department of Neurology at the Federal Center for Brain and Neurotechnology, points out that multiple sclerosis is a disease of our time, and every 5 minutes a new case is diagnosed in the world.

According to the doctor, there is no problem in diagnosing the disease, but on the contrary, the problem lies in over-diagnosing it.

She points out that the main reason for overdiagnosis is failure to take into account clinical manifestations, as the necessary tests to rule out other diseases similar to CT scans are not performed. The disease still poses a threat to the population, because external factors have a significant negative impact and increase the incidence of multiple sclerosis. For example, countries in the Middle East were previously less susceptible to multiple sclerosis, but now the situation has changed for the worse due to the development of the mining industry, processing of oil products, and a change in lifestyle. People, as 50-100 infections are currently diagnosed in these countries for every 100,000 people.

According to her, previously some countries were not considered vulnerable to the spread of multiple sclerosis: New Zealand indigenous people and Native Americans.

The specialist points out that multiple sclerosis develops under the influence of several factors, which are modifiable and do not depend on the person.

According to her, modifiable risk factors for developing multiple sclerosis include smoking, carrying the Epstein-Barr virus or having previously had mononucleosis. These factors also include excess weight in adolescence, emotional stress and vitamin D deficiency.

The doctor points out that it is possible to prevent the development of the disease by following a healthy lifestyle and paying attention to the balance of work and rest times.
