UN delivers aid to flood victims in Yemen on camels

The United Nations used camels to transport humanitarian aid to thousands of families affected by floods in four governorates in western Yemen.

“Amidst significant access challenges due to damaged roads, the UNFPA-led Rapid Response Mechanism has helped more than 9,340 flood-affected families in Yemen,” the UNFPA said in a post on its X platform on Wednesday.

He added that this aid "has been distributed in the governorates of Al Mahwit, Al Hudaydah, Hajjah and Raymah, since August 2024."

The UN Fund noted that the aid is being provided "with the support of the United Nations Central Emergency Fund and the European Union." It attached photos of camels transporting aid in mountainous areas of Yemen, indicating the difficulty of transporting relief aid due to the destruction of roads caused by floods.

Since the beginning of last August, nearly 190 people have died and hundreds have been injured due to floods and thunderstorms in several Yemeni governorates, and more than a quarter of a million people have been affected, especially those living in displacement camps, according to government, Houthi and UN statistics.
