Doctors reveal the effects of microplastics entering the body

Jakarta - Clinical nutrition specialist from the University of Indonesia Dr. dr. Luciana B. Sutanto, MS, SpGK(K) said that microplastics can cause various health problems if they enter the body.

When contacted by ANTARA from Jakarta on Wednesday, Lucian said that microplastics are synthetic compounds measuring less than 5mm that are difficult to decompose.

"If microplastics enter the body, particles measuring less than 100 nanometers can reach almost all organs in the human body after entering it. The impacts can include inflammation, fertility disorders, endocrine, immune systems, and even death," he explained.

However, according to him, swallowed plastic cannot always be destroyed by stomach acid and digestive enzymes so the risk of it being absorbed by the digestive tract is very low.
