MOSCOW - The Kremlin on Friday demanded clarification on recent remarks by U.S. Vice President JD Vance on the possible deployment of U.S. troops to Ukraine and new anti-Russian sanctions.
Moscow said the statement introduced “new elements” into Washington’s position.
Speaking at a news conference in Moscow, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia expects further explanations during upcoming contacts with US officials.
"We have never heard such a formulation before, it has never been expressed before. Of course, during the contacts that we are discussing, we hope to receive further clarifications," Peskov said.
Peskov also noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump had tasked their aides to prepare for a personal meeting following their telephone conversation on Wednesday (12/2).
However, he acknowledged that holding such talks would take "several days."
When asked whether discussions could take place on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference scheduled for February 14-16, Peskov neither confirmed nor denied the possibility.
The comments came after Putin and Trump held their first official phone call since Trump took office, discussing key global and bilateral issues.
