Madrid/Istanbul - Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares said on Wednesday (12/2) that any possible peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine must be fair to Europe and the region.
During a visit to the French capital, Paris, along with several foreign ministers of other European Union member states, Albares commented on US President Donald Trump's earlier announcement of his telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
He responded to Trump's remarks cautiously, asserting, "Nothing can be decided about Ukraine without Ukraine, and nothing can be decided about European security without Europe."
"Russia's attack on Ukraine clearly has an impact on European security," he added.
Albares also stressed that any peace deal must respect the UN Charter. "An unjust peace cannot end an unjust war, because such a deal would not benefit European security or global stability," he said.
Albares' remarks came shortly after Trump and Putin had a phone call. "We discussed Ukraine, the Middle East, energy, artificial intelligence, the strength of the dollar, and many other issues," Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social.
Trump also said they talked about each other's strengths and the "great benefits that can one day be gained through working together."
