TNTC Main Hall: Walking sharks attract diving enthusiasts

Manokwari, West Papua - The Cendrawasih Bay National Park (TNTC) Center said that the walking shark species which has been designated as a priority animal, has an attraction for diving enthusiasts.

Head of the TNTC Center, Supartono in Manokwari, West Papua, Saturday, said that walking sharks are nocturnal animals that actively move at night.

Although not as popular as whale sharks, walking sharks are able to attract the attention of tourists who enjoy night diving activities in the Cendrawasih Bay National Park area.

"Walking sharks as one of the endemic species have the potential to increase the visiting time of diving tourists," said Supartono.

In the long term, he said, the determination of the status of ongoing shark management is expected to provide an economic impact for communities along the coast of Cendrawasih Bay.

The TNTC Center continues to educate the public to play an active role in preserving the ecosystem for the survival of animals that fall into the priority management category.

"So far, walking sharks are not the target of fishermen's catches and instead have the potential for ecotourism and research activities.
