US to establish ties with North Korea, Trump says

Washington - President Donald Trump said the US would establish relations with North Korea.

"We will be engaging with North Korea, with Kim Jong Un," Trump said at a joint press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba at the White House on Friday (7/2).

Trump said his good relationship with Kim was "a very valuable asset for all parties."

"I mean, I get along with him, he gets along with me. And that's a good thing, not a bad thing," he said, referring to Kim.

Meanwhile, Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba stressed the need for both countries to address North Korea's nuclear and missile programs, which pose a serious threat to Japan, the US and beyond.

"Japan and the US will work together toward the complete denuclearization of North Korea," he said.

Trump became the first sitting US president to set foot in North Korean territory in 2019.

As part of negotiations with Pyongyang over its banned nuclear and ballistic missile programs, he met with Kim in the demilitarized zone that separates North and South Korea.

Since then, North Korea has conducted a series of missile and nuclear tests, including what it claims was a successful launch of a solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile in 2023.
