Nintendo delays Switch 2 pre-orders in US due to Trump tariffs

Jakarta - Nintendo has postponed the pre- order schedule for its latest console, the Switch 2, in the United States following President Donald Trump's announcement of a new tariff policy earlier this week.

As reported by Engadget on Saturday, the pre-order period which was previously scheduled to open on April 9 has now been postponed until an undetermined date.

“Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not begin on April 9, 2025, in order to evaluate the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions. Nintendo will announce a new schedule at a later date. The June 5, 2025 launch date remains unchanged,” Nintendo said in a statement.

As is known, Nintendo officially announced the Switch 2 on April 2, 2025. A few hours after the announcement, the Trump administration announced a series of new tariffs targeting various countries, including Japan, China, and Vietnam.

Products from China and Vietnam, where Nintendo manufactures most of its hardware, will be subject to import duties of 34 percent and 46 percent, respectively.

In the United States, Nintendo has stated that the Switch 2 will retail for $450. As Polygon notes, that price has already sparked a backlash from fans, who have been calling for Nintendo to lower the price.

As of now, it remains uncertain what steps Nintendo will take after assessing the tariff situation.

It is known that the Switch 2 is scheduled to be released on June 5, 2025. The console comes with a body as thick as the previous model, but carries a much larger screen, namely 7.9 inches with 1080p resolution, compared to the 6.2 inch 720p screen on the previous version.

The console also supports refresh rates of up to 120fps. Despite using an LCD screen instead of OLED, the Switch 2 still supports HDR.

The new Joy-Con now attach magnetically and feature larger SL and SR buttons for more comfort when playing with a single Joy-Con. The analog sticks are also larger, and each Joy-Con can be used as a mouse in some games that support the feature.
