Study reveals hypertension affects a person's risk of developing dementia.

A study published in the journal Nature Medicine, as reported on the Medical Daily website, Friday, revealed that hypertension can affect a person's risk of developing dementia in old age.

In a study of 34,000 adults over the age of 40 from rural areas in China, researchers found a link between untreated hypertension (high blood pressure) and dementia. Participants with untreated hypertension were found to have a 42 percent higher lifetime risk of developing dementia than those without.

To find out if the intervention had an impact, researchers divided participants into two groups. The first group consisted of 17,000 patients who received hypertension medication with individualized support, such as training in monitoring blood pressure at home, healthy habits by reducing sodium and alcohol intake, and consistency in treatment.
