Water aerobics can help you lose weight and reduce your waistline

Jakarta - Water aerobics can help people who are overweight or obese lose weight and reduce their waistline, according to a new study.

The results of an analysis published last month in BMJ Open suggest that participating in water exercise sessions for 10 weeks or more could be an effective weight-loss strategy, especially for women and those over the age of 45.

Water aerobics can work the cardiovascular system and also provide additional resistance to the muscles, because you're moving through water, says Julie See, director of education for the Aquatic Exercise Association , as quoted in a Health release on Wednesday.

In a new BMJ Open review, researchers analyzed the results of 10 studies conducted in the United States, Malaysia, Brazil, India and the Netherlands.

Overall, the study involved 286 participants aged 20 to 70 who were all considered overweight or obese based on their body mass index.

The study looked at water aerobic interventions such as aqua Zumba , water yoga and aqua jogging lasting between six and 12 weeks.
