The College of Cardinals, which met in the Sistine Chapel on Wednesday, failed to elect the 267th Pope to succeed Pope Francis.
Voting began today, Thursday, with the participation of 133 cardinals under the age of 80, at 9:15 AM Italian time (2 GMT).
The College of Cardinals will hold two voting sessions, one in the morning and one in the evening, until a two-thirds majority is reached on the new pope.
If a new pope is elected during one of the voting rounds, white smoke will rise from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, and within an hour he will be presented to the world from the great balcony of St. Peter's Basilica.
If a pope is not elected, black smoke will rise from the chimney, as happened yesterday, with the smoke signal expected to sound twice during the day.
