The new pope, who was born in Chicago, USA, chose the name Leo XIV and was a close aide to the late Pope Francis.
Robert Prevost was born in Chicago on September 14, 1955, to a French father and an Italian mother. He began studying mathematics but joined the Augustinian Order in Rome and was ordained a priest in 1982.
He traveled to Peru on a mission, then returned to Chicago to obtain a doctorate in canon law, and then left again for Peru, where he headed a seminary for the preparation of priests.
In 2001, he was elected Superior General of the Augustinian Order for a 12-year term. Pope Francis then appointed him Bishop of Chiclayo, northern Peru, where he remained until 2023. He was also a member of the country's bishops' conference.
