Naomi Osaka continued her winning run on clay by defeating wild card Sara Errani 6-2, 6-3 on Wednesday to advance to the second round of the WTA 1000 Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome.
Last week, Osaka did something she hadn’t done in 10 years. The former world No. 1 stepped into the WTA 125 tournament in Saint-Malo, France, and won the L’Open 35 de Saint-Malo trophy, her first clay-court title.
"I didn't really have an ego when I played that tournament," Osaka told reporters with a smile after beating Errani, as reported by the WTA.
"Obviously I would be very disappointed if we lost in the first round."
"I think people will say that if I don't win trophies. ... There are a lot of situations that can happen. For me, I just want to focus on tennis. I want to gain experience on clay," the 27-year-old said.
