The non-profit organization that owns the free encyclopedia Wikipedia, the Wikimedia Foundation, plans to use artificial intelligence (AI) to support the process of providing information, but will not make it a substitute for Wikipedia's community of editors and volunteer writers.
According to a TechCrunch release , the Wikimedia Foundation said that it will use AI to introduce new features that can "remove technical barriers" and provide tools for editors, moderators, and monitors to complete their tasks more easily and efficiently.
Amid concerns that AI could replace human work, particularly in content creation, Wikimedia has stressed that it intends to use AI as a tool to make human work easier, not replace it.
The organization states that generative AI will be used in certain areas, including in the creation of AI-based workflows that can automate certain tasks.
Additionally, AI will be used to improve the accessibility of information on Wikipedia, so that editors can focus more on the discussions needed to build consensus in creating, changing, and updating articles.
AI will also assist editors in the automated translation process and help with the onboarding process for new volunteer writers.
