Abkhazia: We continue contacts with Damascus despite the major transformations witnessed in Syria

Abkhazia announced that its diplomatic mission in Syria continues its work and contact with Syrian officials despite the major changes that Syria has witnessed recently.

Abkhazian Foreign Minister Oleg Bartsits said in an interview with RIA Novosti that his country's mission in Syria continues its work and is in contact with local officials.

Bartsits added, "Despite all the major changes in political and social life in Syria, we have maintained diplomatic relations. Our mission is still operating, and we are in contact with officials. We will continue to develop cooperation."

At the end of November 2024, Syrian opposition armed groups launched a large-scale attack on Syrian army positions, and on December 8, they entered the capital, Damascus.

Former President Bashar al-Assad left the country, and on January 29, Ahmad al-Sharaa, head of the new Syrian administration, was declared president of Syria during the transitional period.

It's worth noting that following the 1992-1993 military conflict, Abkhazia declared its independence from Georgia, and Russia recognized it in 2008. Since then, Tbilisi has described the region as "occupied territory," while Sukhum insists on recognizing its international status and engaging in good-neighborly dialogue on an equal footing. In addition to Russia, four other countries have officially recognized Abkhazia: Nicaragua, Venezuela, Nauru, and Syria.
