ASKALSI assesses that the submarine cable network in Indonesia is inadequate

Head of Training, Certification, and Events for the Indonesian Association of Submarine Cable Communication Systems Alvin Aslam assessed that the submarine communication cable network in Indonesia is currently inadequate, not enough to meet the need for internet access.

After the signing of the Joint Initiative Statement for Subsea Connectivity Ecosystem Development in Indonesia he said that the submarine cable network deployed in Indonesia is only around 55,000 km.

"I think it's still lacking. I'll give you an analogy, because the growth of internet traffic in the world is limitless, the bigger the growth, the bigger the infrastructure that must be provided. Right now, maybe we can say it's just as it is," he said.

Although he could not yet state how many submarine cables should ideally be installed to meet connectivity needs in Indonesia, Alvin said that the current submarine communication cable network that has been installed is not sufficient.

He only gave an illustration that a submarine communication cable network is needed to connect the islands in Indonesia, which number around 17 thousand.

"We have 17 thousand islands. The best way to connect the islands is with cables," he said.

"The second is that we cannot isolate Indonesia, there must be branches of submarine cables everywhere. I think that also needs to be thought about and developed further," he added.
