For the first time in history, a woman has assumed the position of head of MI6 in Britain

The British government has appointed the first woman to head the British foreign intelligence service, MI6. She is the first woman to hold this position since its founding, a position previously reserved for men.

A press release on the government website read: "The Prime Minister today announced the appointment of Blaise Mitreville as the first female head of MI6. She will be the 18th head in the organisation's history, and the first woman to hold the post, at a time when the UK faces increasing threats from our adversaries."

The statement indicated that Mitreville will succeed Richard Moore, who will leave his position next fall.
