Major American cities are slowly sinking into the ground!

Satellite observation data has revealed that 28 of the most populous US cities—including New York, Chicago, and Houston—are experiencing gradual subsidence.

Accordingly, scientists from the Virginia Institute of Technology warn that any change, even a slight one, could eventually lead to dire consequences.

Using advanced satellite technology, researchers created detailed maps showing the rates of soil subsidence in major US cities. The results revealed alarming data, with signs of soil subsidence evident in all 28 cities included in the study.

The results are even more worrying when we know that:

25 out of 28 cities  are affected by the problem of subsidence, covering more than 65% of their area.

The rate of subsidence  ranges from 2 to 10 mm per year.

For example, in Houston, 40 percent of the city's area is subsiding at more than 5 mm per year, and 12 percent is subsiding at a rate of 1 cm per year. The same applies to New York, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.

Scientists point out that the main factors behind land subsidence are overexploitation of groundwater, geological processes, and pressure on urban infrastructure. Land subsidence combined with rising sea levels poses a significant risk because it significantly increases the risk of flooding in coastal areas. In the long term, it could lead to the distortion and destruction of buildings, damage to transportation routes, disruption of sewage networks, and flooding of low-lying areas.

Scientists suggest enhancing monitoring using satellite technology, reviewing water use strategies, and developing programs to adapt urban infrastructure. Of course, the risks of landslides must be taken into account during new construction.
