Mancini expresses desire to return to coaching Italy national team

Italian national team coach, Roberto Mancini, expressed his desire to return to coaching Gli Azzurri after almost two years away from the coaching position.

Mancini told Gazzeta dello Sportz that he wants to feel the atmosphere of the national team and the spirit of the young Italian players again."I feel like I still have something unfinished with Italy. Seeing the development of the players now, I am sure we can rebuild the glory that we once achieved," Mancini said.

"I've won with my club, but winning with Italy is something different. You always want to go back to a place where you were happy. I'm happy at Coverciano, the atmosphere is great."

Italy are currently looking for a new coach after sacking Luciano Spalletti following a 0-3 defeat by Norway in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers in the Asia-Europe zone on Saturday (7/6).

Mancini himself left the Italian national team in August 2023 and had time to coach the Saudi Arabian national team. However, his decision was controversial because it was made ahead of the 2024 European Cup qualifying round.

During his leadership, Roberto Mancini managed to bring Italy to win the 2020 European Cup (Euro) by defeating England on penalties in the final.

Under his tutelage, young players such as Federico Chiesa, Nicolo Barella and Gianluigi Donnarumma shone on the international stage.

However, until now, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has not provided an official comment regarding Mancini's possible return.
