UNICEF: Casualties reported in attack on UN aid convoy in North Darfur, Sudan

"We have received information that a convoy of trucks belonging to the World Food Programme and UNICEF was attacked last night while they were waiting in Al-Koma, North Darfur, to obtain approval to proceed to El Fasher," the spokeswoman said in response to questions from Reuters on Tuesday. She did not accuse anyone of responsibility for the attack.

Days ago, the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused the Rapid Support Forces of bombing World Food Programme warehouses, completely burning them and the food they contained. No injuries were reported.

For some time, Sudanese authorities have accused the Rapid Support Forces of launching drone attacks on civilian facilities, including power plants and infrastructure in the country's cities, without comment from the forces.

Since mid-April 2023, the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces have been waging a war that has left more than 20,000 dead and approximately 15 million displaced and refugees, according to the United Nations and local authorities. A study conducted by American universities estimated the death toll at approximately 130,000.
