Apple is reportedly considering using artificial intelligence (AI) models from OpenAI and Anthropic to support updates to its Siri virtual assistant, instead of relying entirely on its own internally developed technology.
Bloomberg reported that, despite using third-party technology, Apple is said to be continuing the development of an internal project dubbed “LLM Siri,” namely Siri powered by Apple’s own large language model (LLM), as reported by Tech Crunch on Wednesday.
However, the Cupertino, California-based technology company has also reportedly asked OpenAI and Anthropic to train special versions of their models to run in the testing phase of Apple's cloud infrastructure.
Apple previously targeted the launch of the AI version of Siri in 2025, but had to delay it until 2026 or later due to various technical challenges faced during development.
The delay reinforces the notion that Apple has been lagging behind competitors like Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic in the AI development race for the past few years.
Siri can currently connect with ChatGPT to answer complex questions. However, this latest move shows that Apple is opening up opportunities for deeper collaboration with third-party AI technology providers, as part of their strategy to deliver a more sophisticated and responsive Siri in the future.
