The ministry explained in a press statement that "in a scene that transcends the bounds of humanity and is devoid of all religious and international values and norms, the occupation forces committed a horrific crime at dawn on Thursday, storming and invading the Turkish cemetery, located in the Al-Mawasi area, west of Khan Yunis Governorate."
She added, "The occupation forces stormed the cemetery with tanks and bulldozers, bulldozed and dug up graves, and stole the bodies of martyrs and the dead, in a brutal and criminal act that is not sanctioned by any religion or law."
She noted that "this crime coincided with the bulldozing and destruction of the displacement camps surrounding the cemetery, displacing hundreds of families who found temporary refuge in these tents from the horrors of war, exacerbating the worsening humanitarian suffering in light of the ongoing aggressive war."
It condemned in the strongest terms this "heinous crime against cemeteries, the exhumation of graves, the theft of the bodies of the dead and martyrs, and the violation of their sanctity, in a blatant aggressive behavior," considering that "this crime represents a blatant violation of the sanctity of the dead, and a blatant assault on the sanctity of cemeteries and human dignity after death, and reveals the extent of the moral decadence that the occupation has reached, which is not satisfied with killing the living, but rather pursues the dead in their graves."
She stated that "the desecration of graves and disrespect for the sanctity of the dead by the occupying forces constitutes a violation of all divine values and international norms that criminalize violating the sanctity of the dead, even in times of war."
She reported that the occupation forces had completely or partially destroyed approximately 40 of the 60 cemeteries across the Gaza Strip during the brutal war of extermination they are waging against the territory, confirming that the occupation forces are deliberately targeting and tampering with cemeteries under flimsy pretexts.
International legal and human rights institutions and the international community have called for an urgent international investigation into this heinous crime, for the international community to assume its moral and humanitarian responsibilities, and for immediate action to halt these repeated violations, hold the occupation accountable for its crimes against Palestinians, both living and dead, and protect Islamic holy sites and cemeteries in Palestine.
Since October 7, 2023, Israel has waged a comprehensive war on the Gaza Strip, leaving more than 195,000 Palestinians dead or wounded, most of them children and women. More than 10,000 are missing, and hundreds of thousands have been displaced. International accusations have been leveled against Israel of deliberately using starvation and destruction as tools of war.
