German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced on Sunday his opposition to Israel's plan to establish what it calls a "humanitarian city" in the city of Rafah , south of the Gaza Strip .
In statements to the German ARD channel, Meretz stressed that he has been dissatisfied for weeks with the Israeli government's practices in the Gaza Strip.
He explained that he had repeatedly expressed his dissatisfaction and that he had also discussed these issues with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu , who is wanted by the International Criminal Court for his responsibility for committing war crimes in Gaza.
Meretz expressed his hope for reaching a two-state solution to the Palestinian issue in cooperation with the Americans.
He said, "The Palestinian people have the right to have a place to live, but what is happening now in the Gaza Strip is unacceptable."
Germany has been widely criticized as one of Israel's most prominent political and military supporters in its genocidal war against the Gaza Strip.
With full American support, Israel has continued its genocidal war in Gaza since October 7, 2023 , leaving more than 196,000 Palestinians dead or wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 10,000 missing, in addition to hundreds of thousands of displaced persons and an unprecedented humanitarian and health crisis.
