Israel denies renewal of UN official's visa and restricts aid workers' access to Gaza and Jerusalem

Eri Kaneko, a spokeswoman for the office, stated that UN staff visas were being granted for shorter periods than usual, numerous agency requests to enter Gaza were being denied, and Palestinian staff were being denied entry permits to East Jerusalem.

This comes as Israel continues its genocidal campaign against the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023, including killing, starvation, destruction, and forced displacement, ignoring all international calls and orders from the International Court of Justice to halt it.

"Last week, we were informed that the Israeli authorities would not extend the visa of our office head, Jonathan Whittall, beyond August," Kaneko said, explaining that the decision came after his statements at a press conference about starving people being killed while trying to obtain food.

The Israeli mission to the United Nations has yet to comment on the resolution, but Israel has previously rejected UN criticism, describing it as "biased."

On Saturday, the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza warned of the catastrophic consequences of the famine hitting the Strip due to the strict Israeli closure of the crossings since early March. The ministry confirmed a significant increase in death rates from hunger.

"A catastrophic famine and bloody massacres near US aid centers (death traps) threaten the lives of thousands of citizens in the Gaza Strip," the ministry said in a statement.

On May 27, Tel Aviv and Washington adopted a plan to distribute limited aid outside the supervision of the United Nations and international organizations. This mechanism has exacerbated the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza, with the Israeli occupation army firing on those queuing for aid, forcing them to choose between starvation or being shot.

This mechanism, now described as a "death trap," has resulted in the deaths of 877 Palestinians and the injury of 5,666 others since May 27, according to a statement from the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza.
