Jean-Pierre Filiu: Why doesn't Israel know how to end a war?

French historian Jean-Pierre Filiu wrote that the wars waged by the Israeli army often last for years unless they are ended by American foreign intervention, noting that short wars are more suitable for Israel.

In his column in Le Monde, the author cited numerous examples of Israel's wars that only ended with foreign intervention, starting with what he calls the 1948 War of Independence, in which the Israeli army won, but the United States imposed a ceasefire.

The author noted that the State of Israel, within its current borders, occupies 77% of what was known as Palestine following successive wars, the first of which lasted 18 months, followed by the Tripartite Aggression. The United States forced the three aggressors—Israel, Britain, and France—to suspend hostilities, before forcing Israel to evacuate the occupied territories, particularly the Gaza Strip , in March 1957.

Short wars followed, such as the June 1967 war, in which the United States was able to establish a ceasefire before the Arab defeat prompted what was known as the Soviet Union to react, the author says. Then came the October 1973 war , with an Egyptian-Syrian attack, and after 18 days, the United States stopped it, like its predecessors.

This was followed by the Lebanon wars and then the Gaza wars, all of which were halted by American pressure, and even the war launched by Israel against Iran on June 13, which ended 12 days later with an unprecedented intervention by the United States on Israel's side.

History teaches us that the Israeli government cannot be persuaded, but must be forced to end hostilities.

The author noted that current Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had previously obstructed the peace process during his tenure as prime minister from 1996 to 1999, and that he had found in the war on Gaza, which had become an end in itself, the surest way to evade the multiple legal proceedings targeting him.
