Meta appoints Shengjia Zhao as AI research leader

Meta has appointed former OpenAI researcher Shengjia Zhao to lead artificial intelligence (AI) research efforts at the company's new artificial intelligence laboratory, Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL).

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that Shengjia Zhao will become chief scientist at Meta Superintelligence Labs in a post on Threads on Friday (July 25).

"Shengjia co-founded this new lab and has been our lead scientist since day one. Now that our recruitment is underway and our team is solidifying, we have decided to formalize his leadership role," he said.

Zuckerberg noted in his post that Zhao had pioneered several breakthroughs, including a "new scaling paradigm."

He was likely referring to Zhao's work on OpenAI's reasoning model, o1, where he is listed as a foundational contributor alongside OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever.
