A Taiwanese weekly magazine "revealed" that in September 2023, before Taiwan's presidential election, Li Wenzong, the "chief accountant" of then-People's Party Chairman Ko Wen-je, had contacted former Mainland Affairs Council Vice Chairman Zhang Xianyao and Yi Lian Group Chairman Lin Yi-shou, using this to "go directly to Xi Jinping's office" and gain Beijing's "positive view" of Ko Wen-je's candidacy for president; the People's Party responded that the weekly magazine used unidentified text messages to "smear" Ko Wen-je, which was basically an attempt to cling to the ruling party, and they expressed regret for part
Ko Wen-je is currently in custody for his involvement in the "Jinghua City" plot ratio and political donation scandals. Mirror Weekly reported on Tuesday (the 11th) that authorities, during an interview last year with former Taipei Mayor's Office Director Lee Wen-chung, discovered frequent contact between Lee and former Mainland Affairs Council Vice Chairman Chang Hsien-yao during the presidential election. Lee also subpoenaed Ko Wen-je, stating that Chang had traveled to China to meet with Xi Jinping's office and Taiwan Affairs Office Director Song Tao, confirming Beijing's positive view of Ko's candidacy. Chang also urged Ko to collaborate with Foxconn founder Terry Gou.
Li Wenzong reportedly informed Ko Wen-je, "Mr. Chang Hsien-yao, on behalf of Founder Lin Yi-shou, has informed me of the following: 1. Chang Hsien-yao has traveled to mainland China and met with relevant high-ranking officials (Xi Jinping's office, Song Tao from the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council) to confirm mainland China's positive view of Chairman Ko. 2. Mainland China also views Founder Lin Yi-shou's support for Chairman Ko Wen-je positively. 3. Chang Hsien-yao has met with Terry Gou twice to persuade them to collaborate. 4. Chang Hsien-yao informed me that Terry Gou will deliver an important speech in late September or early October. 5. The KMT is quite diverse, and the likelihood of Ko and Hou collaborating is very low. 6. Relevant individuals are working to facilitate Hou You-yi's withdrawal from the election. 7. Assisted in fundraising exceeding 100 million yuan. 8. Chang Hsien-yao expressed his intention to seek at-large seats in the Legislative Yuan."
Due to the sensitive content, reports indicate that Ko Wen-je first replied "received" after receiving the message, and then prompted "Please delete the letter to avoid leaving a record", "I will also delete it", and Li Wen-chong immediately replied "deleted".
Huang Kuo-chang: Smearing is not enough, but we continue to smear
In response, People's Party spokesperson Wu Yixuan issued a statement saying that after the prosecution filed the lawsuit, Mirror Weekly continued to use content unrelated to the Jinghua City case, and even text messages from unknown sources, to try to smear Ko Wen-je; Ko Wen-je is now in custody and unable to defend himself. Mirror Weekly has repeatedly used reports to try to destroy Ko Wen-je's personality, which is simply a show of loyalty to the ruling party.
Huang Kuo-chang, leader of the People's Party caucus, criticized Mirror Weekly for not merely smearing Taiwan but also smearing the DPP. He said he was happy to be a DPP thug and that there was no need to respond. When asked by the media whether he believed Taiwanese political parties needed to establish channels of communication with Beijing, Huang Kuo-chang, who is currently running for the leadership of the People's Party, stated that the People's Party defends Taiwan's democracy, freedom, and the rule of law, as well as the Taiwanese way of life. He also emphasized that the two sides should avoid a violent conflict and that the government should maintain good communication. This is what all the people expect.
