Bappenas recommends genetic-based innovations for protected cattle

Deputy Minister of National Development Planning/Deputy Head of the National Development Planning Agency Febrian Alphyanto Ruddyard suggested that PT Moosa Genetika Farmindo immediately protect its genetic-based innovation for Indonesian tropical dairy cattle as intellectual property.

"The Red and White Cow (Cow) program demonstrates once again that innovation isn't just in the creative economy, but also in the STEM ( Science, Technology, Energy, and Math) realm . So, this is a major breakthrough, and perhaps our homework is how to ensure we protect this innovation," he said at the Red and White Cow launch event at Lapangan Banteng Jakarta on Friday.

Red and White Cattle is a genetic improvement program designed to strengthen the Indonesian dairy cattle industry with a focus on smallholder farming systems.

Minister of National Development Planning/Head of Bappenas Rachmat Pambudy initiated this program, considering that he is also an academic in the field of agribusiness and a professor at the Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB).

This program aims to develop dairy cattle that are more productive and resilient to tropical conditions, by utilizing local, adapted germplasm.

One of the strategic steps in genetic improvement is what is called Genomic Selection (GS), a selection method based on genetic information and the calculation of gEBV ( genomic Estimated Breeding Value ).

GS allows for faster and more accurate identification of superior traits such as cattle production, resistance to tropical diseases, feed efficiency, and adaptation to hot environments.

This is because the condition of smallholder livestock farming in Indonesia generally does not have adequate production records, different business objectives, and diverse management.
