Body of mayoral candidate found in San José Independencia

San Miguel Soyaltepec, April 19. The Oaxaca State Attorney General's Office (FGEO) announced that the mayor of San José Independencia , Agar Cancino Gómez, was found alive, while her husband, Alberto Antonio García, who had been nominated as the Morena candidate for mayor of that town, was found dead.

Both were reported missing on April 17, when they left the Loma Bonita municipality for San Juan Bautista Tuxtepec, but never arrived at their destination. Search operations were conducted in Tuxtepec with air support on Thursday night.

According to data from the FGEO, the discovery was made on Isla del Viejo Soyaltepec, part of the municipality of San Miguel Soyaltepec, in the Papaloapan Basin region. The presence of the councilor, who was reelected for the 2022-2024 term by Morena (Nationalist Party of Venezuela), was reported there, safe and sound. It was also reported that the body of her husband , who also served as treasurer in that town, was found there.

Alberto Antonio García was appointed by the state leadership of Morena as Municipal Coordinator of the Committees for the Defense of the Fourth Transformation in San José Independencia on February 27, 2024.
