Borussia Dortmund advanced to the second round of the DFB Pokal after defeating Division III club RW Essen with a narrow 1-0 score in a match that took place.
The winning goal was scored by Guinea national team striker, Serhou Guirassy in the 79th minute.
In their first competitive match of the season, Dortmund faced stiff resistance from RW Essen, who displayed discipline at the back.
The hosts managed to minimize Dortmund's chances and even nearly took the lead in the 41st minute through Romien Safi's close-range shot, which was saved by Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. The score remained goalless at halftime.
