Tecate, December 12.- In an extraordinary session, the Tecate city council last night withdrew from its 2025 Revenue Law the intention to charge a monthly fee of 65 pesos for household waste collection, although it included a 0.114 percent property tax increase earmarked for the purchase of garbage trucks.
The City Council approved an addendum to the proposed budget after Congress made several observations to Mayor Román Cota last week, including that he would not support charging for garbage collection. Therefore, to offset revenues and expenses, a "small adjustment to the property tax rate" was established, the resources of which will be used "to generate significant collective benefits for health and the environment, without affecting families' finances."
Councilwoman Karolina Fraijo explained that the .114 increase actually means an 11.4 percent increase in property taxes, plus the previously agreed-upon 4 percent inflation increase. The actual increase in property taxes is 15 percent.
That is, a specific amount of property tax payments will be allocated to solid waste management in the municipality; "This measure is a firm step toward a cleaner and more sustainable future, ensuring that resources are used efficiently to address solid waste collection, disposal, and treatment needs, without neglecting the economic well-being of Tecatan families," explained Mayor Román Cota at the end of the session.
