García Luna's defense team requests a postponement of the trial to February 2023.

New York, July 28.—Genaro García Luna's attorneys have requested a postponement of their client's trial, currently scheduled for October 24, to possibly February 2023, citing the massive volume of evidence presented by the federal prosecution that the defense must evaluate, including hundreds of thousands of documents and hundreds of hours of recordings.

In a letter sent to federal judge Brian Cogan, who is presiding over the case against Mexico's former Secretary of Public Security, defense attorney César de Castro and his team argue that the growing volume of documents submitted by the prosecution—more than one million pages to date—especially classified materials, is lengthening the evaluation work the defense is doing in preparing for trial.

The defense's initial request to postpone the trial was made during the most recent pretrial hearing on July 15, but the released letter offers further details for its argument.

The lawyers indicate that García Luna must review the classified material from the prison where he is being held—the Metropolitan Detention Center in New York—along with a member of his defense team, since under regulations, a copy cannot be left with the detainee.
