Gender violence alert issued in Sonora

Yesterday, the Ministry of the Interior issued a declaration of alert for gender-based violence against women in Sonora , particularly in the municipalities of Cajeme, Empalme, Guaymas, Hermosillo, Nogales, and San Luis Río Colorado.

The head of the National Commission for the Prevention and Eradication of Violence against Women (Conavim), Fabiola Alanís Sámano , stated that in the first half of this year, the state ranked third in the country with the highest rate of femicides; meanwhile, the municipalities of Hermosillo, Nogales, Cajeme, Caborca, and Guaymas remain among the 100 with the highest rates of this crime.

At an event in Hermosillo, attended by Governor Claudia Pavlovich, she added that cases of sexual abuse there have doubled in the past six years and rape cases have increased by more than 25 percent , adding to 446 intentional homicides of women and girls from 2015 to 2020.

Alanís added that one in four students has been assaulted at school and that one in three women has been subjected to violence on the street because of their gender.

Citizen observatory celebrates the declaration

The National Citizen Observatory on Femicide (OCNF) celebrated the Declaration of Gender-Based Violence Against Women Alert for Sonora, issued yesterday.

Two years ago, on June 26, 2019, the OCNF and Justicia Pro Persona requested this measure through Ana Yeli Pérez Garrido, legal representative of the latter organization; María de la Luz Estrada Mendoza, executive coordinator of the OCNF; and Silvia Núñez Esquer, representative of the OCNF in Sonora.

They requested that the alert be declared in the municipalities of Hermosillo, Nogales, Cajeme, San Luis del Río Colorado, Guaymas, and Empalme due to the problem of disappearances and femicides.
