Governments must offer forgiveness "for past atrocities," Sheinbaum insists.

Mexico City. Leading the ceremony commemorating the 700th anniversary of the mythical founding of Mexico-Tenochtitlan, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo insisted this Saturday on the obligation of governments to offer forgiveness "for the atrocities" of the past.

In what could be considered a new allusion to the Spanish state, although without mentioning it explicitly, the president stated: "Governments that have the courage to apologize for the atrocities of the past that marked their history do not weaken: they reconcile with themselves and grow with a freedom that only profound truth can provide."

In this regard, he added that the Fourth Transformation "is not only an economic or political project; it is above all a project of dignity. A project that recognizes that there can be no true justice if we do not begin by settling the historical debt with Indigenous peoples."

To the applause of hundreds of guests gathered in the stands around the Zócalo square, he asserted that "there can be no democracy if the voices of those who have been resisting for centuries are excluded," nor can there be national identity "without recognizing and giving due place to the profound and proud indigenous face of Mexico, its essence and its cultural greatness."
