Heavy rains have recently hit several provinces in China, causing disasters. A mudslide in Guilin, Guangxi, has left eight people missing. A landslide in Guizhou has reportedly trapped 19 people. A hospital in Wuhan has also experienced leaking roofs.
CCTV reported that on May 23rd, a flash flood and mudslide struck Sanshe Village, Sishui Township, Longsheng District, Guilin, Guangxi. Ten houses were damaged, eight people were suspected missing, and three were injured. One trapped person was rescued at the scene, but was found to have no vital signs.
The Guilin Meteorological Observatory issued an orange warning signal for heavy rain on Friday morning. According to monitoring, the maximum rainfall in the 24 hours from 8:00 on May 22 to 8:00 on May 23 occurred in Xian Shui Town, Quanzhou, which was 181.3 mm; the maximum rainfall in one hour occurred in Wantian Yao Ethnic Township, Lingui, with a rainfall of 75.4 mm at 5:00 on Friday morning.
Two killed in Guizhou landslide
Besides Guangxi, Guizhou was also severely affected. Xinhua News Agency reported that on the morning of the 22nd, heavy rain triggered a landslide in Qingyang Village, Guowa Township, Dafang County, Bijie City, Guizhou Province, trapping 19 people from eight households, two of whom died.
Meteorological data indicates that from 6:00 AM on May 21st to 6:00 AM on May 22nd, heavy rainfall occurred in northwestern and central Guizhou Province, with torrential downpours hitting Dafang County, where three weather monitoring stations recorded over 200 mm of precipitation. Dafang County Mayor Ren Jinfei stated, "Due to the excessive rainfall, which broke the local record, the landslide volume is initially estimated to be approximately 2 million cubic meters."
Heavy rain in Wuhan causes severe flooding
In addition, according to Dafeng News, heavy rain on the 22nd in Wuhan, Hubei, caused severe flooding, with some parents even kayaking to pick up their children from kindergarten and helping pick up other children. Heavy rain also affected areas such as Wuhan University People's Hospital, the Luojia Gate of Wuhan University, and the exit of Wuchang Railway Station.
One netizen posted a video showing that there was a leak in the main campus of Wuhan University People's Hospital. Some netizens were worried that the equipment would get wet and unusable. The hospital simply said that "the equipment is all normal" and was not affected by the leak.
Fuyang, Anhui Province, experiences a 50-year rainstorm
In Fuyang, Anhui, torrential rains occurred that occurred once in more than 50 years. The Beijing News pointed out that on the 22nd, the maximum rainfall in Fuyang, Anhui reached 242.8 mm. Some students fell in the wind and rain, and the bus was parked in the accumulated water after being flooded. The extreme rainstorm caused unexpected power outages in Fuyang in many places. The power supply company repaired the problem in the rain overnight, and the traffic police implemented temporary traffic control on the sections with serious waterlogging.
Yellow warning for heavy rain
China Weather Network issued a yellow warning for heavy rain on the morning of the 23rd. Heavy to torrential rain will occur in parts of most parts of Guangxi, central and northern Guangdong, southern Jiangxi, western Fujian, southwestern and eastern Zhejiang, Shanghai, southeastern Jiangsu, northern Guizhou, southwestern Yunnan, and the southern part of the western Sichuan Plateau. Among them, local areas in southwestern Guangxi will have heavy rain of 100 to 130 mm.
