Mexicali, May 30.- The Mexicali Municipal Police have used lethal force in 12 cases during 2022 and so far in 2023, on occasions in which the lives of the victims have been at risk.
Municipal Public Security Director Pedro Ariel Mendívil García justified the cases by citing the application of an international protocol on the use of lethal force against perpetrators.
He explained that only two of the 12 cases are still under investigation by the State Attorney General's Office (FGE).
"There are two pending investigation files, but we trust that self-defense will be determined," he said.
The head of the corporation said that two recent cases involved domestic violence, in which women were at risk.
"The police officers' actions have been in defense of people's lives. We will continue to act in this way based on the protocol we have in place," he said.
He added that the officers involved in the use of lethal force have been monitored for their emotional health.
"There's psychological treatment for officers; it's part of what we do in complex interventions," he said.
Domestic violence increased by 20%
In the first four months of 2023, domestic violence has increased by 20 percent in Mexicali compared to the same period in 2022, the director of Public Security acknowledged.
He mentioned that one of the reasons for this increase is the encouragement of reporting by various government agencies.
He commented that alongside this incident, arrests in flagrante delicto have increased in 2023, with 433 compared to 255 in 2022.
