Mexicali, December 14.—Since yesterday, environmental monitors in the state capital have been reading “purple,” meaning pollution levels exceeding 200, an environment considered “very unhealthy,” while red indicates “unhealthy” levels. On the morning of Monday, December 13, monitors exceeded 300 points.
Environmental monitors can be viewed at www.purpleair.com, which displays real-time results, and at www.redspira.org, which displays weighted averages.
In a press release, the 24th Mexicali City Council urged people to avoid outdoor sports and recreational activities and to remain indoors as much as possible.
They attribute this situation to the period of thermal inversion, the concentration of pollutants, and the low temperatures recorded in recent days.
