Soprano Lourdes Ambriz, a key figure in Mexican lyric poetry, died this Thursday in Mexico City at the age of 64 due to cancer, according to close friends and public cultural institutions.
The death occurred in a hospital where she was admitted, and as of 6:30 p.m., it is unknown where the funeral will take place.
Admired and beloved in the world of Mexican music and culture, Lourdes Ambriz developed an extensive and prolific career, which began in 1980 singing a small role with the National Symphony Orchestra in the concert version of Verdi's opera Don Carlo , and which lasted for more than four decades, representing Mexico on various stages in Europe and the United States.
Born on July 20, 1961, her wide range and vocal mastery allowed her to explore all genres, from lead to baroque and contemporary music, giving several national premieres and distinguishing herself as one of the greatest Mexican opera performers, first as a coloratura soprano and then as a lyric soprano and light lyric soprano.
