The Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) has imposed administrative sanctions on 344 final waste processing sites (TPA) in regencies and cities across Indonesia for conducting open dumping.
"This sanction is a form of guidance, so that waste management can be even better," said Rasio Ridho Sani, Deputy for Pollution Control and Environmental Damage at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, when opening the socialization of the 2025 TPA Guidance Policy and Implementation in Pangkalpinang.
He said that there are five landfills in the Bangka Belitung Islands Province that have received administrative sanctions, namely Bangka Regency, West Bangka, Central Bangka, Belitung and Pangkalpinang City, because they are still managing waste openly.
"These sanctions could be increased if local governments do not manage waste properly," he said.
He stated that this sanction served as a warning from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry to local governments to improve their waste management. Therefore, he hopes that local governments, particularly those in the Bangka Belitung Islands, will manage this waste even better.
"This sanction is actually a form of guidance and compassion, so we can address this waste problem. We don't want to have to resort to even harsher measures," he said.
According to him, currently almost all cities in Indonesia are experiencing waste problems and frankly, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry is not easy to impose even heavier sanctions on local governments.
"Let's work together to overcome this waste problem, as a form of our responsibility towards the environment," he said.
