Nanoparticles with bioactive compounds could contribute to the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

Ensenada, July 20.- Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia affecting older adults. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that approximately 60 million people worldwide are living with Alzheimer's, of whom 8.1 percent are women and 5.4 percent are men, over the age of 65.

In Mexico, according to data from the Ministry of Health, approximately 1.3 million people suffer from Alzheimer's disease, a figure that represents between 60 and 70 percent of dementia diagnoses and most frequently affects older adults of the same age as the international average age of 65.

This neurological disease, considered a priority for global care, is caused by changes in the brain caused by the presence of a protein called beta amyloid, which frequently accumulates in the temporal lobe. This protein causes inflammation and the progressive death of neurons.

The WHO estimates that by 2030, there will be 78 million people worldwide with this disease, which is being researched internationally and nationally. Research points toward effective treatments that cure or halt its progression. Patients with Alzheimer's disease require medications that stimulate and help prolong the life of memory neurons to improve their quality of life.
