OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and his team of AI model developers responded to a hot topic: user complaints regarding the performance of the latest GPT-5 model, which is considered to have decreased compared to the previous model, GPT-4o.
Sam admitted that the performance drop was caused by a problem with GPT-5's new feature, the real-time router , a system that chooses which model to use for each request, both for quick responses and answers that require a longer thought process.
"GPT-5 will feel smarter starting today. Yesterday, we had a serious problem and the autoswitcher didn't work for a while, so GPT-5 seemed a lot dumber," Sam said
He added that OpenAI is adjusting the decision boundary to make model selection more precise, and will transparently reveal which model answers each user's question.
