Tijuana, March 9. The local City Council implemented support programs to help women interested in starting a project do so, "because for us, that's true empowerment, helping them get out of their situations. We set the path, and the citizens have to seek it and follow it," said City Councilwoman Montserrat Caballero RamÃrez.
With the goal of incorporating all vulnerable groups into the productive sector, the municipal government granted loans aimed at entrepreneurship, thus contributing to the livelihood of Tijuana families. This is the case of the Municipal Women's Institute (Immujer), which trains Tijuana women and manages their loans.
During the pandemic
"For example, during the pandemic, women supported their households through sales, so we continue to support them because that determination is very important to us," the mayor said, according to a press release.
According to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), 357,000 women participate in Tijuana's economy, representing 40 percent of the population. Of this total, 32 percent work providing various services to citizens, 28 percent work in the manufacturing industry, 21 percent in the commercial sector, and 9 percent in the restaurant sector.
