The President of Finland announces his readiness to recognize the State of Palestine and condemns the inhumane situation in Gaza.

"The decisions of France, Britain, and Canada reinforce the trend toward recognizing Palestine, as part of efforts to revive the peace process," Stapp tweeted.

Earlier, several countries, including France and Canada, pledged to recognize the State of Palestine in conjunction with the UN General Assembly session scheduled for next September.

Although the Finnish president, elected for a six-year term, has limited powers, he participates in coordinating the country's foreign policy in close cooperation with the government.

"If I receive a proposal to recognize the State of Palestine, I am prepared to accept it," Stapp added, denouncing the "inhumane situation" in the Gaza Strip.

He noted that he was aware of "differing views" among Finns regarding recognition of a Palestinian state, as well as "concerns," calling for "an open and honest discussion."

The far-right Finns Party and the Christian Democrats oppose recognition of Palestine.

For his part, Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo reiterated Helsinki's support for the two-state solution on Friday, without specifying whether his government intends to move forward with recognizing a Palestinian state.

He explained that consultations with the President on foreign policy and Middle East issues will continue until the UN General Assembly convenes at the end of next September.
