Mexico City, September 21.- The Senate will vote today on the bill that extends military participation in the fight against insecurity and organized crime until 2028 , after strong lobbying that intensified yesterday, in both directions, since while Morena insisted on obtaining the votes it lacks for a qualified majority, businessman Claudio X. González appeared in that chamber to pressure the opposition bloc to stop the reform.
Everything indicates that as of last night, there were still only a few votes left to secure the Senate's approval of the bill, which was given its first reading yesterday.
Tuesday was a tense day at the Reforma and Insurgentes venue , as the PAN announced early in the morning that all 21 members of its party were "absolutely committed to voting for Mexico."
Hours later, when Morena leader Mario Delgado announced that PAN member Raúl Paz Alonzo was joining the ranks of the cherry-colored party, the blue and whites collapsed .
There are reports that some PRI senators will not attend today's session or that others will vote in favor of the reform , which will allow the government to implement its security strategy, making it clear to PAN members that Morena could fracture the opposition bloc today.
PAN member Kenia López accused her former colleague Paz Alonzo of "giving in to the pressure and corrupting power of Morena . "
In an interview, the coordinator of the Blue and White party, Julen Rementería, lamented the sudden defection. He maintained that the PAN is losing one vote, while Morena was missing 10. He asserted that no other Blue and White party will vote with the majority party and that Roberto Juan Moya confirmed to him that he is firmly with the parliamentary group.
The PRI group, led by Miguel Ángel Osorio Chong, didn't take a position and maintained a revealing silence. Mario Zamora, a Sinaloa resident, tried to avoid the press, saying only that he hadn't yet decided his vote.
