The Jewish Agency is a public body that serves as the executive body of the Zionist movement, encouraging Jewish immigration to Palestine. After the declaration of the establishment of Israel on May 15, 1948 (the Palestinian Nakba), its name became "The Jewish Agency for Israel."
The official Israeli Broadcasting Corporation said on Sunday that Almog was scheduled to visit South Africa and meet with the Jewish community there, without specifying the date of the canceled visit.
The commission considered "South Africa one of the most hostile countries to Israel in the world, and it is suing Tel Aviv before the International Court of Justice in The Hague on charges of war crimes and genocide in the Gaza Strip."
In late 2023, South Africa filed a lawsuit against Israel before the International Court of Justice on the grounds that it had violated the 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.
In mid-October 2024, Zane Dangor, Director-General of South Africa's Department of International Relations and Cooperation, said his country was determined to complete the genocide case it had filed against Israel, despite international pressure to withdraw the case.
The Broadcasting Authority continued: "A situation assessment was conducted prior to Almog's departure, after which it was decided to cancel the visit for fear that anti-Israel groups would seek to issue an arrest warrant against him."

The commission did not clarify the role played by the Jewish Agency or its head in the Israeli genocide in Gaza, but Almog previously commanded the Israeli military's Southern Command between 2000 and 2003 before being appointed to his position in June 2022.
In 2005, an arrest warrant was issued for Almog in Britain for his involvement in the demolition of approximately 50 Palestinian homes in Rafah, south of the Gaza Strip. He was forced to return to Israel without even leaving the plane, according to the same source.
Since the beginning of the Israeli genocide in the Gaza Strip, there has been an increase in prosecutions of Israeli officials and soldiers by international human rights organizations supporting the Palestinians in various countries around the world.
With American support, Israel has been committing genocide in Gaza since October 7, 2023, including killing, starvation, destruction, and forced displacement, ignoring all international calls and orders from the International Court of Justice to halt it.
The genocide left 63,371 Palestinians dead, 159,835 injured, most of them children and women, more than 9,000 missing, hundreds of thousands displaced, and a famine that claimed the lives of 332 people, including 124 children.
