The decision follows statements by Finnish President Alexander Stubb on August 25, in which he described the situation in Gaza as a "catastrophe that reflects the failure of humanity," asserting that Israel's actions in the Strip contravene international law and humanitarian conventions.

On July 30, 15 Western countries, including France, issued a collective call for recognition of the State of Palestine and a ceasefire in Gaza. Canada, Australia, Spain, Norway, Ireland, and Portugal participated in the joint statement, in addition to Finland, which officially announced its accession today.
