INE validates 100% of the signatures required for the revocation consultation

Mexico City, January 18.- With just over two weeks remaining until the deadline established by the guidelines for the recall process, the goal making it mandatory was met this Tuesday . According to the National Electoral Institute's report as of January 17, 2,845,634 signatures requesting this exercise were preliminarily considered valid.

The figure exceeds the minimum threshold required by the General Law on Mandate Revocation, equivalent to 3 percent of the national roll of signatures, which is equivalent to 2,874,771 of the required signatures . However, the INE announced that it will continue verifying signatures until it reaches 3.2 million signatures, equivalent to 3.5 percent of the roll of signatures, in order to have a significant margin for potential challenges from citizens who object to the approved signatures.

Based on these figures, the recall campaign should take place on April 10th, although its details have not been finalized, given the differences between the INE and the federal government over the budget for this exercise . This is because the two fundamental requirements for it to take place have been met: it must be supported by 3 percent of the citizens registered on the nominal list and a similar percentage must be supported in at least 17 states across the country.

Since last week, this last requirement was met, and 21 states have now met it. The states that have already met this requirement are: Aguascalientes, Baja California Sur, Campeche, Colima, Chiapas, Chihuahua, Mexico City, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Michoacán, Morelos, Nayarit, Oaxaca, Quintana Roo, San Luis Potosí, Sonora, Sinaloa, Tabasco, Tamaulipas, Tlaxcala, and Zacatecas.
