The INE agrees to temporarily postpone stages of the consultation

 

Mexico City, November 17.- With a narrow majority of 6 to 5, amid strong criticism from Morena that “repudiated” the decision and the support of the majority of the opposition parties , the General Council of the National Electoral Institute approved the agreement by which it was determined to “temporarily postpone the development of the process from the stages subsequent to the verification of the signatures of citizen support and the delivery of the report containing the result of the verification of the signatures of support .”

In justifying the decision, the president of the INE, Lorenzo Córdova, stated that "given this deficit of 2.327 billion pesos, and the impossibility of advancing the activities that a recall process entails under the optimal conditions established by law, today a Draft Agreement is proposed to this Council for the postponement of some, and on this I want to be categorical, they are not being canceled, some of the activities planned in the guidelines, calendars and programs approved by this General Council are being postponed."

Córdova noted that it should be clear that " this is not a suspension of the process or a refusal to comply with the INE's constitutional obligations. 

This is an agreement that seeks to provide full certainty to this unprecedented exercise of citizen participation "so that the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation can rule on the process

Almost immediately, Morena representative Mario Llergo criticized the INE's attempt to suspend the organization, an organization that, he said, "has done everything possible to bend the law and attempt, by every means, to thwart the constitutionally mandated exercise of recall." He criticized the attempts to persuade the Chamber of Deputies and the Supreme Court "to attend to and satisfy their whims," ​​citing a lack of funding, and therefore demanded that the INE not cancel this historic exercise of citizen participation.

Later, his co-religionist, César Hernández, seconded the disqualifications of the INE but opened the door by pointing out that it is still possible to adjust the INE budget: "Let's prioritize dialogue, of course, we could seek these alternatives, but let's let the voice of the people be heard."

Despite the conflicting positions among the party representatives, the councilors' position was split in half, allowing the agreement to be passed by a single vote.
